Happy 65th Birthday!
Hello Fellow Agers,
First and foremost, congratulations on turning 65 years old. Here at Harmon Healthcare Consulting we believe aging is a privilege and that is why we are honored to help with your Medicare needs. Here are a few things to know about Medicare and your big birthday.
- Start celebrating early! We recommend getting a three month head start.
- Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) begins three months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and extends for three months after. That’s a total of seven months to sign up.
- Avoid late penalties and delayed coverage by signing up on time. In other words DO NOT MISS YOUR ENROLLMENT PERIOD! Get the party started early! You only turn 65 once.
- Medicare has four parts, each incorporating a different insurance need.
- Part A – Hospital insurance (usually free if you’ve worked 10+ years).
- Part B – Medical insurance (doctors, outpatient care, etc.).
- Part C – Medicare Advantage (private plans that bundle A, B, and usually D).
- Part D – Prescription drug coverage.
- Consider Medigap (Medicare Supplement) instead of Medicare Advantage:
Harmon Healthcare Consulting (HHC) will help you understand Medicare Supplement Plans. An alternative option to Medicare Advantage. Book a consultation today to get your questions answered. Medicare Supplement Plans aka Medigap plans offer:
- Nationwide coverage. See any doctor that accepts Medicare.
- Predictable out of pocket costs
- Peace of mind. No underwriting during the initial enrollment period (IEP). pre-existing conditions will not result in a denial of coverage.
- Medicare Part D as your prescription drug coverage.
We will guide you on how to enroll in a Part D Medicare Plan.
* It is important to consider enrollment during the Initial open enrollment (IEP) at age 65, even if you are not currently on medications. If you enroll at a later time you could be subject to penalties and delayed coverage if it is not part of the annual enrollment period. Instead, enroll at 65 and you have the option of reviewing and changing your plan yearly during open enrollment if your needs have changed. Open enrollment runs October 15th to December 7th each year. Mark that on your calendar!
- An important reminder:
Medicare is not automatic and you are not enrolled just because you will receive Social Security. Even though it is a milestone birthday you will still need to do the work of enrollment. HHC is happy to help you with the process. Book a consultation now to get started.
Finally, you will receive a lot of information about Medicare in the build up to your 65th birthday. We would love for you to consider consulting with us so that we can make the process less confusing, less overwhelming. We are familiar with Medicare on a personal and professional level and are happy to answer your questions. Regardless of the plan you choose it is important that you have your questions answered and that you feel knowledgeable about your healthcare options.
HHC Healthy Hints – Brought to you by Michael and Shelley.
A few years ago we set out to change our lifestyle and our relationship with aging. We now know everything we do counts towards longevity. Eating whole foods, avoiding alcohol and processed sugar, using our feet as transportation and taking care of our mental health. Each week we’ll list some easy and fun ways to create healthy habits and have fun while doing it.
Eat 3 dates a day to your diet and the benefits will stack up.
✅ Nutritional Benefits
- Natural Energy Boost: Dates are rich in natural sugars (glucose, fructose, and sucrose), which provide quick and sustained energy—great for mid-day slumps or pre-workout fuel.
- Fiber-Rich: Just three dates give you about 2 grams of dietary fiber, supporting digestive health and preventing constipation.
- Loaded with Nutrients: They contain potassium, magnesium, copper, vitamin B6, and small amounts of iron and calcium—important for heart, muscle, and nerve function.
🧠 Brain and Mood Support
- Brain Health: Dates contain antioxidants like flavonoids and carotenoids, which help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain.
- Mood Regulation: The B vitamins and natural sugars can help stabilize mood and support neurotransmitter function.
❤️ Heart Health
- Lower Blood Pressure: The potassium and magnesium in dates help regulate blood pressure.
- Cholesterol-Free & Low Fat: They support heart health without adding unhealthy fats.
🍬 Blood Sugar Friendly (in moderation)
- Although naturally sweet, dates have a low glycemic index, which means they don’t spike your blood sugar as quickly as refined sugar.
🦴 Bone Support
- Dates offer trace minerals like selenium, manganese, and magnesium—key players in maintaining bone density and strength.
🍽️ Practical Tip:
Try them:
- Stuffed with almond butter or tahini
- Chopped into oatmeal or smoothies
- As a sweet snack with nuts for balance
Mix dates with nuts, spread them with a natural nut butter, blend them with smoothies or top your morning oats with them. According to healthline, dates are a nutritional powerhouse. They are easy to add to your diet and extremely versatile. Dates are high in calories so they should be consumed in moderation. Eating just a few has big benefits. Here are two of our favorite recipes to try. Unicorns in the Kitchen (amazing date balls) and Natural Delights (a refreshing salad)
